If you’ve seen photos of the Shala River on Instagram, you know why they call it the "Thailand of Albania." Crystal blue water, towering cliffs, and lush greenery. But those photos don't tell you about the 4:00 AM alarm, the bumpy roads, or the freezing water.
I recently made this journey with my family on a guided day tour. Here is exactly how to get there, what the journey is really like, and the one major mistake I made so you can avoid it.
Option 1: The Guided Tour (My Experience)
The most common way. You book a spot with an agency in Tirana, and they handle the logistics.
The Early Start
The journey starts early. We woke up at 4:00 AM to be ready for a 5:00 AM departure.
- The Vibe: Our bus wasn't fully booked, so we had freedom to sit where we wanted. I grabbed a spot near my family.
- Pro Tip: Even if you are not a morning person, be on time. The agencies leave promptly from gathering points like Zogu i Zi or Gazheli Petrol.
The Drive to Koman (Buckle Up!)
This is the part most travel blogs gloss over. The drive from Tirana to the Koman Terminal takes about 3 hours, but the last leg is intense.
- The Road Conditions: A large section of the road leading to the terminal was unpaved, full of potholes, and rocky. It is essentially a construction site in parts.
- The Experience: Even though our bus had good tires and suspension, we felt every bump. The whole bus was shaking!
- How to Cope: The mood on the bus can get tense, but we handled it with humor. I spent the time cracking jokes about the road to keep everyone laughing. If you get carsick easily, take a pill before you leave Shkoder.
The Transfer at Koman Terminal
Once you arrive at the Koman ferry terminal, expect chaos. It is crowded with cars, buses, and confused tourists.
- The Wait: We waited for about an hour just to get sorted.
- Why a Guide Helps: This is where the tour guide earned their money. He went to the terminal staff, argued the logistics, and found our specific boat. If I had been alone, I would have been lost in the sea of people.
The Boat Ride
We boarded a small boat (not the big car ferry). The ride to Shala takes about 1 hour and is spectacular.
- The Atmosphere: We listened to popular Albanian music, enjoyed the wind, and looked at the cliffs.

Option 2: Renting a Car (The "Do It Yourself" Method)
Looking back, this is the one thing I considered changing.

The Crowds vs. Peace
Shala is beautiful, but it is not empty. There was loud music and crowds of people when we landed.
- My Strategy: The guide gave us 3 hours of free time. My family and I immediately split from the main group and walked further down the beach until we found a quiet spot away from the speakers. You can find peace, but you have to look for it.
The "Ice Bath" Challenge
The water is incredibly cold. I mean, freezing.
- To Swim or Not to Swim? I thought, "To come to Shala and not swim is a disaster." So I jumped in. It was shocking, but they say cold water makes you stronger! It was absolutely worth it for the experience.
Food & Facilities
- Lunch: Prices are high. You are "paying for the view." We brought small snacks but bought a full lunch there. Be prepared to pay a premium.
- Restrooms: This was the biggest surprise. I expected a hole in the ground, but the restrooms were actually luxurious and very clean.
My Verdict: The One Mistake to Avoid
If I could do this trip again tomorrow, I would change one thing: I would stay overnight.
Because we were on a day tour, we only had 3 hours at the river. Just as we were relaxing, we had to leave. The people staying in the guesthouses get to enjoy the river after 4:00 PM when the day-trippers (like us) leave. That is when the true magic happens.
