How to Get to Shala River from Tirana
There are three ways to do the trip:
- Rental car to Koman, then boat. Most freedom, you choose when to leave and where to stop.
- Guided day tour. Transport, boat tickets and timing are handled for you. Pickup is usually between 5:00 and 6:00 AM.
- Minibus to Koman, then boat. The cheapest option, but with fixed times and an early start.
No road goes all the way to the river. Whatever you choose, the last part is always the boat.
Driving from Tirana to Shala River
The route is simple. Drive north from Tirana to Shkodër on the main road, turn east toward Vau i Dejës, then follow the SH25 along the Drin valley up to the Koman dam and ferry terminal. The first part to Shkodër is a good asphalt road. The last 31 km, from Vau i Dejës to Koman, is narrow and winding along the lake.
Road condition: This stretch was rebuilt starting in 2025. When I went, it was still a construction site with gravel and potholes. Local operators now report it is asphalted, so the drive is much easier than before, but it stays narrow with many tight bends. Take it slowly.
Which car to take: Our cars are allowed on the Koman road, and for this trip we recommend an SUV. A higher car like a VW Tiguan handles the narrow bends, steep parts and any loose sections much more comfortably than a small city car. Parking: After the Koman bridge there are several public and private parking lots. Private lots like Blini Parking charge around €5 per car and include a shuttle to the boats. Don't park along the road before the tunnel: those spots risk a police fine, and the people offering them don't own them.
Driving tips:
- Leave Tirana by 6:00 AM to reach Koman before the 9:30 to 10:00 departures.
- Fill up in Shkodër. There are few fuel stations after Vau i Dejës.
- Download offline maps, the signal drops in the valley.
- Bring cash for parking, the boat and food.

Boats to Shala leave Koman between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. The ride takes about an hour through the narrow canyon of Lake Koman, one of the most scenic boat trips in the Balkans.
- Return time: boats usually leave Shala around 15:00 and are back in Koman around 16:00.
- Price: return boat tickets booked online cost roughly €17 to €30 per person, depending on the operator.
- Booking: book ahead in July and August. Boats fill up and the terminal gets crowded.
- Season: Shala boats only run in the summer months. Check with the operator before you go.
- Low water: in late summer, operators may switch to smaller boats inside the canyon, and you may have to walk a short distance at the river.
Boats sometimes don't run because of bad weather or too few bookings, so keep your plans a bit flexible.

Day tours from Tirana usually cost $64 to $110 per person and last 10 to 14 hours. For two or more people, a rental car plus boat tickets often works out cheaper, and you get the freedom to stay longer.

By Bus from Tirana to Shala River
There are direct buses from Tirana to Koman. FlixBus runs the route in about 3 hours, with tickets from around €17, and several shuttle companies sell bus and boat together with early morning departures. Book online in advance, as public transport to Koman is limited and seats sell out in summer.
What the Trip Is Really Like (My Experience)
I did this trip with my family on a guided day tour. Here's what the photos on Instagram don't show.
The start. Alarm at 4:00 AM, departure at 5:00 from Zogu i Zi. The agencies leave on time, so don't be late.
The road. The last part before Koman was still under construction then, and rough. Even with a good bus, the whole thing was shaking. We got through it by joking about the road the whole way. If you get carsick, take something before Shkodër.
The terminal. Koman was chaos: cars, buses, and lost tourists everywhere. We waited about an hour. This is where our guide earned his money, he found our boat while we would have been lost.

Shala itself. It's beautiful, but not empty. There was loud music near the landing. We walked further down the beach and found a quiet spot. The water is freezing, but coming all the way to Shala and not swimming felt wrong, so I jumped in. Worth it. Lunch is expensive, you pay for the view. The restrooms surprised me: clean and modern.
My one regret. We had only 3 hours at the river. Next time I'd rent a car and stay overnight.
Should You Stay Overnight at Shala?
Yes, if you can. There are guesthouses right on the river. After the day boats leave around 15:00, Shala gets quiet, and in the morning you have it almost to yourself before the next group arrives. With a rental car you can park at Koman, stay a night, and drive back the next day without rushing.
