tirana to vlore

TL;DR: Tirana to Vlorë is roughly 150km and takes about 2 hours via the main highway through Fier. The road is in good condition, the drive is straightforward, and the detour to Zvërnec lagoon just outside Vlorë is the one stop most visitors miss but everyone who makes it remembers.

How Long is the Drive from Tirana to Vlorë?

The drive from Tirana to Vlorë is approximately 150km and takes around 2 to 2.5 hours under normal conditions. The main route via the A1 and SH4 highway through Fier is well-maintained and fast. In peak summer months, expect slower traffic near Fier and on the approach into Vlorë, which can add 30 to 40 minutes to the journey.

Which Route Should You Take

There are two realistic options depending on what you want from the drive.

The direct route via Fier follows the A1 south from Tirana, then picks up the SH4 toward Vlorë. This is the fastest option, mostly flat, and easy to navigate. It is the right choice if you are arriving in one day and want to reach Vlorë with time to spare.

The scenic route via Berat adds roughly 1.5 hours but takes you through one of Albania's most impressive cities. Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its Ottoman old town built along a hillside above the Osum River. If you have the flexibility, leaving Tirana early and breaking the journey in Berat for lunch before continuing south is one of the better half-day experiences you can put together in Albania. The road from Berat to Vlorë passes through the Muzina valley and is in good condition throughout.

If this is your first time driving in Albania and you want a straightforward introduction to the roads before tackling the Riviera, take the direct route via Fier.

If you want to map out exact timings before you go, there is a departure planner at the end of this guide that calculates your arrival at each stop and suggests the right car for the route you choose.

Stops Along the Direct Route

The Fier route is largely flat and passes through agricultural land. There are not many must-stop points on the highway itself, but two are worth knowing.

Apollonia is an ancient Greek city located about 12km west of Fier, set on a hill above the plain. The archaeological site is well-preserved, has a small museum, and is rarely crowded. It takes about an hour to walk through at a relaxed pace and makes a natural break midway through the drive.

Fier itself is a working city rather than a tourist destination, but it has petrol stations, cafes, and a good place to stop if you need to refuel or eat before the final stretch to Vlorë.

Zvërnec: The Stop Most People Miss

About 5km before you reach Vlorë city center, a turnoff leads to the Nartë Lagoon. At the edge of the lagoon, a 120-metre wooden walkway crosses the water to a small island. That island is Zvërnec, and on it stands the Monastery of Saint Mary, a medieval Orthodox monastery dating to the 13th century.

The site is quiet in a way that few places in Albania still manage to be. The lagoon reflects the mountains behind Vlorë, the wooden bridge creaks underfoot, and the monastery itself is simple and well-kept. The visit takes 30 to 45 minutes and costs nothing to enter.

Most tourists drive past the Nartë turnoff without knowing it is there. If you search for Zvërnec on Google Maps before leaving Tirana, you will find it easily. It is signposted from the main road but the sign is easy to miss at speed.

Coming from Tirana on the main route, Zvërnec sits just before Vlorë on the left side of the road as you approach the city. Stop here first, then continue into Vlorë.

What to Do in Vlorë

Vlorë is where Albanian independence was declared in 1912, and the city carries that history without making a spectacle of it. The Independence Monument on the main boulevard, Flag Square, and the Independence Museum are worth an hour of your time if you have any interest in Albanian history.

The Lungomare, Vlorë's seafront promenade, runs along the bay and is a good place to walk in the evening. The beach closest to the city center is not the most scenic in Albania, but it is clean and calm. Most people use Vlorë as a base for the Riviera rather than a beach destination in itself.

Kaninë Castle sits on a hill above the city and offers one of the better panoramic views in southern Albania, looking out over the bay, the lagoon, and on clear days across to Corfu. It is a short drive up from the city and takes about an hour to walk around.

Best Time to Go

May, June, and September are the best months for this drive. The weather is warm, the roads are quieter than in July and August, and accommodation in Vlorë is easier to find and cheaper. July and August are peak season along the entire Albanian coast and traffic on the approach to Vlorë can become genuinely slow.

If you are planning to continue south from Vlorë along the Riviera, our guide to driving the Albanian Riviera covers what to expect on that stretch of road, including the Llogara Pass.

Do You Need a Car for This Route

Yes, for this route a car is the only practical option. There are buses from Tirana to Vlorë, but they do not stop at Apollonia or Zvërnec, and getting between Vlorë and the lagoon without a car requires a taxi or negotiating with a local driver. If you are planning to continue south to the Riviera after Vlorë, a car becomes even more essential since public transport along the coast is limited and unreliable.

Before you book, use the planner below. Set your departure time from Tirana, choose your route, and it will show you when you arrive at Apollonia, Zvërnec, and Vlorë, with car recommendations based on the road.
