Tirana to Theth by car: Hyundai Santa Fe SUV rental from Rent Car Tirana

The drive from Tirana to Theth is about 170 km and takes 3.5 to 4 hours. You go north to Shkodër, then climb the SH21 mountain road over the Qafa e Thorës pass. The road is fully asphalted but narrow and steep, so we rent SUVs only for this trip, and snow chains are required when there is snow.

Most guides tell you a rental car is risky here and push a 4x4 taxi instead. You can drive it yourself. You just need the right car, an early start and a few local rules, which this guide covers.

The Route from Tirana to Theth

The route has two very different halves: about 98 km of easy main road to Shkodër, then about 73 km of mountain road that takes longer than the first half.

  1. Tirana to Shkodër (about 98 km, 1.5 to 2 hours). Take the SH1 north through Fushë-Krujë and Lezhë. This is a busy two-lane main road, so leave Tirana early to miss the morning traffic.
  2. Shkodër to Koplik (about 20 km). Follow signs for Koplik and the Hani i Hotit border. This is your last easy stretch.
  3. Koplik to Bogë. Turn right in Koplik onto the SH21. The road narrows and starts to climb into the mountains.
  4. Bogë to Qafa e Thorës. Switchbacks take you up to the pass at around 1,700 m, one of the highest points in Albania you can reach by car.
  5. Qafa e Thorës to Theth. A long, steep descent into the valley. Use a low gear and your brakes will thank you.

Allow 2 to 2.5 hours from Shkodër to Theth in good weather, and more after rain. For general rules of the road, see our guide to driving in Albania.

What the Road to Theth Is Really Like

The whole SH21 is now asphalted, so the old dirt-track stories are out of date. The challenge today is width, not surface: on many bends two cars cannot pass, and one has to stop or reverse to a wider spot.

How to drive it safely:

  • Drive in daylight only. There is no street lighting and the drops are steep. Plan to arrive before dark.
  • Leave Shkodër before 9:00. Oncoming traffic from guesthouses and minibuses builds through the day.
  • Sound your horn before blind bends. Locals do it, and it warns drivers coming the other way.
  • Give way to minibuses and trucks. They know the road and need more space. Pull into a wider spot and let them pass.
  • Use a low gear downhill. The descent from the pass is long. Riding the brakes overheats them.
  • Watch for animals and rockfall. Cows, goats and small stones on the road are normal, especially after rain.

If you are used to mountain roads in the Alps, you will be fine. If narrow roads make you nervous, take it slow and let faster drivers pass.

Which Car to Rent for Theth

For Theth we rent SUVs only. A small car can get up the asphalt, but an SUV gives you ground clearance for the gravel road to the Blue Eye trailhead, better grip on wet or snowy bends, and more comfort on the long descent.

All our rentals include unlimited kilometres and no deposit. To drive an SUV you need at least 2 years of driving experience, since cars with an engine above 1.2 litres require it. Not sure which size fits your group and luggage? Our guide on matching your car to the terrain helps you choose.

Driving to Theth in Winter

Snow chains are required on the Theth road whenever there is snow. Snow usually arrives from late November and can stay on the pass until April or May, sometimes closing it for days.

  • Ask for chains when you book, and practise fitting them once before you leave Tirana.
  • Check the pass the day before. Your guesthouse in Theth knows the current state of the road better than any website.
  • Expect fewer services. Many guesthouses close from mid-October to spring, so book ahead and confirm they are open.
  • Turn back if in doubt. Shkodër is a good base, and the road will still be there tomorrow.

Fuel, Cash and Phone Signal

Shkodër is your last stop for everything. Theth has no petrol station and no ATM.

  • Fuel: fill the tank in Shkodër or Koplik. The climb uses more fuel than you expect.
  • Cash: guesthouses, restaurants and minibuses in Theth are cash only. Take enough lek or euros for your whole stay.
  • Signal: mobile coverage drops on much of the mountain road and in the valley. Download offline maps before you leave Shkodër.
  • Arrival: tell your guesthouse your expected arrival time, so someone knows you are on the road.

Parking and Getting Around in Theth

Parking in Theth is easy and free: most guesthouses have their own spot, so leave the car there and walk the village.

  • Grunas Waterfall: about 45 minutes on foot each way from the village centre. No need to drive.
  • Blue Eye of Theth: drive down the valley on the gravel road to the trailhead, then walk about 1 hour each way. Our SUVs are allowed on this road. Go slowly and avoid the sharpest stones.
  • Theth Church and the Lock-in Tower: both are a short walk from most guesthouses.

Without a car, the Blue Eye is a 4-hour walk each way from the village, so having the SUV saves you most of a day.

Getting to Theth Without a Car

There is no direct bus from Tirana, so without a car the trip takes two legs and usually a night in Shkodër.

OptionCost (approx.)Notes
Bus Tirana to Shkodër + minibus to ThethAbout €5 + €12 per personMinibuses leave Shkodër around 7:00 and 14:00 in season
City taxi to Shkodër + 4x4 taxi to ThethAbout €50 to €70 + €60 to €90Door to door, no fixed times
4x4 taxi from TiranaAbout €180 one wayFastest without driving

Prices change by season, so check before you go. For two or more people, a few days with an SUV usually costs less than a 4x4 taxi there and back, and you keep the car for the Blue Eye and the rest of the north.

Day Trip or Overnight?

Stay at least one night. A day trip means 7 to 8 hours of driving, part of it on a mountain road you should not drive after dark, with almost no time in the valley.

Two nights let you do the Blue Eye one day and Grunas and the village the next. If you want a shorter outing from the capital, pick one of our day trips from Tirana by car instead. Want to see more of the north on the same trip? Combine Theth with the Shala River, which is also reached through Shkodër.
