Driver’s Guide to Driving in Albania
How Traffic Works in Tirana
Tirana is the busiest city in Albania, and traffic congestion is common, especially during peak hours (08:00–10:00 and 16:30–18:30). Streets like the Ring Road, Durrës Street, and Blloku area often experience delays.
Tips for driving a rental car in Tirana:
- Avoid entering the city center during rush hours
- Use Google Maps or Waze for real-time traffic updates
- Watch out for motorbikes and cyclists weaving through lanes
- Honking is frequent, but often not aggressive — just part of local driving culture
Parking in Major Cities
Finding parking can be tricky, especially in central areas. Most cities operate a paid parking system, and in some neighborhoods, parking is restricted to residents.
What you need to know about parking:
- In Tirana, use the SMS system by sending your license plate to 53155
- Parking zones range from 40–100 lekë/hour
- Avoid yellow lines and entrances — illegal parking can lead to fines or towing
- Sundays are typically free of charge
See our separate blog post with a detailed Parking Map for Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, and other major cities.
Traffic Rules Tourists Should Know
If you're visiting Albania and plan to drive, here are the most important road rules:
- Valid driving licenses from the EU or international licenses are accepted
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h in rural roads, 110 km/h on highways
- No mobile phones while driving (unless hands-free)
- Alcohol limit: max 0.1%. For new drivers (<2 years), the legal limit is 0.0%
